ISMICK 2008

12th International Symposium on the Management of Industrial and Corporate Knowledge

INNOVATION AND INTER-ORGANIZATIONAL KNOWLEDGE CREATION

3-5 November 2008

Luxor Regente Hotel
Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Over more than 15 years Knowledge Management has been explored and promoted both in private organizations and in public administration. Today, the key role of knowledge in socio-economic development and innovation is universally acknowledged, and knowledge management has gradually matured into a serious discipline. It is widely recognized that knowledge management, and in a broader sense knowledge organization and knowledge work, are necessary to secure societal and economic development under varying socio-economic conditions. However, managing knowledge and knowledge productivity is not an easy matter: knowledge tends to be spread in terms of human resources and organizational boundaries and restrictions and, moreover, it operates in very different settings, forms and contexts, including knowledge networks.Since 1993, ISMICK conference meetings are yearly held as working symposia. In the ISMICK meetings we actively seek to combine and discuss ongoing research, professional practice, and consultancy perspectives aimed at capitalizing on knowledge processes and assets. The meeting attracts and mixes an international group of professional people from academia, business, and consulting firms, engaging in lively discussions confronting theory and practice. Recently, an ISMICK-produced book containing an overview of results of 15 Years of Knowledge Management has been published in the series Advances in Knowledge Management (Ergon-Verlag, Germany, ISBN 978-3-89913-580-0). Each year the conference pays special attention to a different theme. The official language is English.ISMICK 2008 is a three-day conference with plenary sessions and discussions taking place on 3-5 November 2008, at Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.ISMICK 2008 deals with all aspects relating to the management of industrial and corporate knowledge, but will pay special attention to the theme of INNOVATION & INTER-ORGANIZATIONAL KNOWLEDGE CREATION. In our networked society, knowledge workers increasingly cooperate and participate across existing organizational boundaries. Monolithic organizations become replaced by more open, adaptive and cooperative structures with stronger capacities for innovation. This raises new issues – for practice as well as research – how knowledge management strategies help organizations survive and thrive in the networked society, and how collaborative problem solving and innovative knowledge creation is to be shaped across organizations.

Papers and contributions are invited on all aspects of industrial and corporate knowledge management (KM), including but not limited to:

Managing knowledge based innovation within and among organizations
The role of human and social factors in knowledge-intensive organizations
The significance of KM in regional socio-economic development
Managing knowledge sharing and productivity in private organizations
Managing knowledge sharing and productivity in public administration
KM in communities of practice and expertise
Case studies, practical experiences, and lessons learnt in KM
KM in networked organizations

Keynote Program

The ISMICK 2008 Symposium will include an interesting program of invited talks related to knowledge and innovation. Keynote speakers will for example discuss knowledge management and innovation experiences across the agricultural and food industry supply chain, and deal with the latest advances in social networking technologies on the World Wide Web and how that will support knowledge workers in the future. Moreover, there will be a special session devoted to the significance and role of knowledge sharing and innovation in regional and national development.
